Girard started out in the 1920s as an épicierie fine (gourmet food retailer) on rue Washington, in Paris’s 8th arrondissement.
In 1930, the original owner’s son, Joseph Girard, decided to transform the business into a wholesale confectioner’s in a new location across town on rue Vieille du Temple.
By 1954, he had set up shop on rue des Archives selling chocolates made in his nearby laboratoire.
Today the company, which specialises in both dragées (sugar-coated almonds) and chocolates, is run by Denis Girard.
